Average Website Conversion Rate by Industry (2021 Statistics)

In today’s topic, we’re going to go over the average website conversion rate by industry using 2021 statistics.

Each year, Contentsquare publishes a report on the digital experience benchmark that aims to help businesses see how they fare against the leading brands. The report in the current year 2021 stands out due to the following reasons:

– It monitors and measures the shift in the consumers’ digital behaviors in 2020 as well as the acceleration of digital transformation that many brands encountered following the occurrence of the pandemic.

– The report includes evaluating over 20 billion user sessions in more than 25 countries for 11 and above industries making it the biggest data report that Contentsquare has ever done.

In the report, Contentsquare data uncovered a 1.82 percent all-industry website conversion rate average. The average mobile website conversion rate is only at 1.5 percent, which suggests that companies need to do something and must put in more effort in simplifying the customers’ mobile checkout experiences to boost conversion funnel optimization.

Let’s get in a little deeper on this data:

Average Website Conversion Rate for All Devices and Industries

Website Conversion Rate – What is It?

In general, the website conversion rate tells you the percentage of visitors that your site has pulled in and initiated the desired action that affects your site. This action turns your visitors into leads or customers.

The desired action could be booking a demo, downloading a mobile app, making a subscription, completing a purchase, signing up for a trial, downloading an ebook, or anything that brings a favorable outcome to your website.

Unlike cost-per-click or click-through rate, the conversion rate tells you how effective your marketing is at making visitors act the way you want them to, such as taking any of the desired actions stated above.

How to Calculate Your Website's Conversion Rate:

You can calculate your conversion rate manually, but you need to know the number of people who visited your website and how many took the desired actions.

To calculate the conversion rate of your website, you need to divide the number of conversions or the number of people who took desired actions by the number of website visitors. Multiply the answer by 100 for the percentage.

For example, a thousand people visited your page that contains an offer to download an ebook. The offer lasted for a month. 50 of your visitors took the suggestion and downloaded the ebook. Following the formula, you need to divide 50 by 1,000, which will give you the answer .05.

To get the percentage, you need to multiply .05 by 100 and get 5 percent. This means that you have a 5 percent conversion rate for that page. If you hate math and dread to even think about calculations, you can sign-up to Google Analytics or other tracking programs to do the calculations for you so you can have it easy.

Average Session Duration per Industry (Time spent on website)

It should be expected that the average session duration of each industry varies. The industries of travel, auto, and grocery have the highest session duration among the sectors that were reviewed.

The financial services, telco, and B2B are some of the industries with the lowest average session duration. Based on the study that Databox has conducted, between 2 and 3 minutes is a rational benchmark for average session duration. Looking at the data, it is safe to assume that a good session duration may be more than 3 minutes.

The study included a survey, in which 55 percent of the respondent marketers reported more than 3 minutes average session duration. 27 percent of the respondents reported more than 4 minutes as their average session duration.

Now does that mean your website’s average session duration should be 2-3 minutes?

Not necessarily because it varies according to each niche. It depends on a variety of factors, but essentially, you want to increase the time users stay on your website in order to not only increase your conversions, but to rank higher on Google.

What is a Good Conversion Rate for my Website?

If you are already getting between 3 percent and 10 percent conversion rates, are you satisfied with that numbers already? Have you ever wondered about the conversion rate that can truly make you complacent?

What is rate of conversion should you aim for? The average conversion rate for landing page across industries is 2.35 percent. However, the landing pages that belong to the top 25 percent Conversion Rates enjoy a conversion rate of 5.31 percent or higher.

If possible, you need your landing page to occupy a spot within the top 10 percent that enjoys a conversion rate of 11.45 percent or above. On a study by Wordstream, thousands of accounts on Google Ads (also known as AdWords when it was first launched) that have combined annual spend of $3 billion were analyzed and the data revealed that the conversion rates of some advertisers are 2 or 3 times higher than the average.

Are you satisfied with having an average conversion rate or would you want to be better than the others that belong in the same industry as yours? By analyzing the enormous amount of data on conversion rates and landing pages, some of the top converting landing pages’ common traits have been identified.

You may be surprised to learn that it is much easier to get favorable conversion rates, but the manner to get there may be different from the conversion rate optimization knowledge that you know.

Average Website Conversion Rate by Industry

Between finance and e-commerce, the latter has much lower conversion rates. Those in the top 10% Conversion Rates enjoy between 3 and 5 times higher rate of conversions as compared to the average for every industry.

This proves that the rule remains the same regardless of industry. However, if you belong in an industry like finance that can be considered a high-performer, 5 percent is not an amazing conversion rate.

If you are to compare your performance against the average across all industries, you are only fooling yourself into believing that you are actually doing better than expected. To be blunt, the top 10 percent are performing almost five times better.

Average Website Conversion Rate for Lead Gen Websites

You can try to look for the published date on lead generation’s average conversion rate, but you will not find any. Some of these lead gen sites include Homeadvisor, Yelp, and Bark.

The Invesp internal metrics found out that an average of 13 percent of visitors turn into customers. The data is based on 35 various lead generation websites. The highest converting site has a sustaining rate of 28 percent.

Average Conversion Rate for B2B Websites

When it comes to conversion rates, B2B is more complicated to deal with than the others. PropelGrowth conducted research to break down the conversion rates according to the qualification of the lead.

They revealed that there’s a 5 percent conversion rate from visitor to a marketing-qualified lead. From sales-qualified to lead to customer purchase, the final conversion, almost reached 30 percent. Based on the given facts, you need to make sure that you are investing time and effort in the ones that will truly convert.

Otherwise, you are only wasting your team’s time on something useless and losing better opportunities.

Things that Determine your Overall Conversion Rate

The intent of your visitors in visiting your website can impact your conversion rate. Are they coming to your website with the intent of buying the things you offer?

Are they fishing information from your website and go to a brick-and-mortar store to make the actual purchase? It depends on the kind of product you present and how your visitors take them.

It is more on the visitor-centric data and not something that you can control, such as design, messaging, and others. If you are aware that your visitors come to your site to browse and no intention of buying, you need to think of ways to make them buy from your site instead of buying the product elsewhere.

How to Get a Higher Conversion Rate for Your Website

If you want to prioritize your conversion rates, you need to focus on better-converting channels. Analyze your analytics report to find out the source of the most traffic. If social is your top channel, it shows that your direct traffic is small.

You may get better conversions if you divert your marketing resources in an email campaign or PPC. You may want to consider investing in an email marketing campaign. Promote Best-Converting Categories or Products Different product categories and physical products have different conversion rates.

Once again, look at your analytics to find out the pages that convert best. When you create your marketing campaigns, make the said pages your top priority. Another thing you can try is to go deeper into your A/B tests.

Why is My Website Redirecting to Another Website?

Is your website redirecting to another website? Why is your website redirecting somewhere else every time you lands on it? Let’s keep this article short, there are two reasons why this could be happening to your website:

1. Your website has been hacked

2. The internal components of your website are not functioning properly

If your website is being redirected to an unknown website or a spam website, then it is likely that it has been hacked. This is something you may want to fix as soon as possible, because chances are that any traffic you are currently getting is not going to want to visit your website anymore if it redirects them to a spammy or malicious site. Which can definitely hurt your brand if you don’t act upon this situation as soon as possible.

Let’s dive into why your website is redirecting to another website:

How Is My Website Redirecting to a Different Website?

There are numerous reasons why your website is redirecting to another website which can include:

Hackers have gained access to your WordPress Login information by obtaining the username and password
Hackers inject code into the backend of your website which can lead to malicious redirects
Your plugins have not been updated in a long time
Your website is old (the system hasn’t been updated in years)
A redirect was added into the WordPress settings by accident
A redirect was added from the Control Panel of the website/server

Most Common Ways Hackers Get Into Your Website:

Many hackers will use hack your website and cause it to redirect to another website by inserting a malicious code. Having a malicious code inserted into your website can have detrimental effects to not just only your website, but to:

Your brand
Your customers
All traffic that comes to your website
Could get you delisted from Google

You could try fixing the issue by identifying where the malicious code has been inserted in your website such as the .htaccess file, theme files, Core WordPress files, index.php, index.html:

I don’t recommend manually finding in the backend of your website (typically in the CPanel), because this can be extremely time consuming.

During this kind of situation, time is of the essence, as customers are landing on your website, they will click out of it as soon as they get redirected to a another website that is spammy or malicious, you’re rankings can drop, or even worse.

Don’t waste your time trying to manually find the malicious code or folder so that you can delete and try to “save” your website, because you can spend a lot of time trying to find the piece of code, but even if you’re a professional hacker for living, you may never find it.

At this point, you really only have 2 options:

Delete Your Website and Start Over (this is why it’s so important to backup your website everyday)
Install a Malware removal plugin (we highly recommend Malcare.com)

Deleting Your Website and Starting Over

Depending on how bad malware has gotten into your website and how much damage it has caused, you may just be better off deleting your website and starting over (which is why it’s important to backup your website every day).

As explained earlier, you can spend a LOT of time trying to figure out by yourself how to remove malware from the backend of your website.

If you don’t want to invest in a Malware removal service (which could take more time), you’re actually better off deleting your website and uploading your backup site because it’s much better to have a website that is down for a little while than to have all of your traffic redirected to a malicious website that can infect the computers of your users!

When Google finds out that you’re website is redirecting to another website that is spammy or malicious, it can look something like this:

Installing a Malware Removal Plugin

If you’re not looking to delete your website and uploading your backup site along with the database to keep your website from redirecting to another website that is malicious, you can start by installing malware removal plugin.

Ways to Prevent Your Website From Getting Hacked:

Install a security plugin

Backup your site everyday
Have an SSL certificate installed on your website

When you’re redesigning your website and deciding what services to display on your homepage, sometimes you can’t help but wonder, what’s the best way to list different services on your website?

This is a common question in the web design community and is frequently brought up during the web design process. We know it can be hard to figure out how to layout your different services in a way that’s not too crowded or too plain.

In this article, I’ll go into detail on the best ways to list different services on your website, even if you several different services:

What are Your Main Services?

Before we dive into showing you how to layout your different services, first you must know what your main services are. Have these questions in mind before laying out your services:

Do your services complement each other? In other words, are they relatively in the same field of expertise?
Do your main services align with your brand and company image?
Which services help you to make to most profit?

For example, if you are an auto body shop, your main services could be auto body repair and engine/transmission repair. Or if you’re a painter then exterior and interior painting could be your main services.

Not all companies are the same, even if they are in the same area of expertise. It all depends on your business model and brand. For example, you can list a low ticket service as one of your main services, and build a larger customer base to which your can sell more services, which can also lead to more sales in the long run like a dentist.

First, you go in to get your teeth cleaned (low-ticket), then after a few visits at the office, eventually you might get an implant (high-ticket).

If you have many services, a good rule of thumb is to not jampack all of your services as readers could be confused as to what you specialize in. Make sure to list your primary services first, before showing your other services.

As you can see from our website, our main service is web design, so in our case, we would list web design above our other services.

Web Design Tip of the Day:

Determining which services to put on your homepage can be challenging if you offer a lot of services or just don’t specialize in one single service, which is definitely O.K., you don’t have to specialize in just 1-2 services for your website to be successful in bringing you more leads.

For web design and SEO purposes, it’s best to describe on your website what you specialize in then your other services can complement your top 1-2 services.

For example, if you serve spaghetti, pizza, lasagna, and ravioli, you need to describe on your website what your primary food option is (Fresh Italian Lasagna) so that readers can fully understand what kind of food you primarily make and then you can add in the complementary food items alongside the primary food item (spaghetti, pizza, and ravioli).

How to Get More Conversions with the Right Layout

What’s even more important than choosing the right services to display and place on your website is the STRATEGY.

What is the message you want to communicate?

If you’re a photographer, your message should be geared around “professional & quality photos” or somewhere in between those lines. Communicate your message with the right colors, visuals, photos, and even videos to help visitors better understand what you do.

Simple is Better

The most effective websites are simple, they are not jampacked and hard to read like this website:

Have a clear message and design the website as simple as possible while at the same time including content that is sales driven and SEO friendly so that your website can rank in the search engines.

Have a structured layout that provides a great user experience. You can start off the website experience with a photo or video to improve the experience:

Is the website needed to generate more leads? Is the website needed to showcase project photos? Is the website needed to help customers buy certain products/services?

2) Who is Your Target Audience?

Designing a website is part of digital marketing, therefore the design of the website can’t be general or made for everyone, it must be designed to fit your target audience. For example if your company sells casual shoe, then you wouldn’t want to build your website to look like it’s an athletic website.

Let’s look at Nike’s website:

3) How Do You Want Your Business to Be Portrayed?

Once you have figured out the goals of the website and the target audience, now you have to know how you portray your brand.

What makes your business different that the competition?

Here is a list of things you should have listed down:

The company’s mission
It’s position in the marketplace
What promise can your brand make to the target audience?
What are the core values of the company?
What value does your business offer that the competition doesn’t?

After answering these statements/questions, you will then have the necessary information to proceed to step #4.

4) Optimize the Website for Search Engines (after web design)

After you have completed the design of the website, it’s now time to optimize it to show up in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo!.

Optimizing your website does not mean it will automatically rank at the top of the search engines, because there are many factors that come into play when trying to rank on the first page of Google such as Domain Authority, relevance, and prominence.

While it is possible to rank on Google by optimizing your website, you shouldn’t miss out on doing this if your website is brand new or has a low domain authority.
